Banned Books Week

September 26, 2011

Banned Books Week 2011 has begun – a week that celebrates the freedom to read while drawing attention to the harms that censorship does to our society and our individual freedoms. We hope that during this week you will read one of your favorite banned/challenged book and think of the ideas the books contain—ideas that bother some people so much they want to prevent you and others from reading it. Click on the link below to see the list of challenged books. Happy Reading! (ALA)

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

September 26, 2011

Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 marks National Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This year’s theme is “Many Backgrounds, Many Stories…One American Spirit.” The Long Wharf  library’s display will showcase books by and about many prominent individuals of Hispanic descent. Stop by to borrow any of these or other award-winning titles available in our collection or click on the link below to view more resources provided by ICONN and Gateway library.
