The library staff welcomes everyone to the Spring semester – our last one in this building! We hope you will stop by to meet us and see what great resources you have access to. Some of these include a stand-alone scanner, over 50 databases in all subject areas, free open workshops and the best resource of all – the librarians! The first day of classes for the Spring 2012 semester is Friday January 20th. Remember to return any long overdue library books or you won’t be allowed to register. We are looking forward to seeing you and hope you had a restful and enjoyable break.

Now that the semester is almost over it’s time for some rest and relaxation – you’ve earned it. Keep in mind that the library will be open during the break but will have abbreviated hours (see our homepage for hours). Feel free to stop by and pick up a book to read if you have some free time – we’ve recently added some new biographies to our collection including Steve Jobs and Derek Jeter. We hope to see you back in the Spring for the last semester here at the Long Wharf campus before we move downtown. Until then, have a safe and peaceful holiday.

Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week 2011 has begun – a week that celebrates the freedom to read while drawing attention to the harms that censorship does to our society and our individual freedoms. We hope that during this week you will read one of your favorite banned/challenged book and think of the ideas the books contain—ideas that bother some people so much they want to prevent you and others from reading it. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 marks National Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This year’s theme is “Many Backgrounds, Many Stories…One American Spirit.” The Long Wharf library’s display will showcase books by and about many prominent individuals of Hispanic descent. Mark your calendars – the first day of classes begins on Monday, August 29th. Here are some important things to keep in mind as you start or continue on your journey to academic success.

1. Are you ready? Have you printed out your class schedule, purchased a flashdrive, notebooks, pens, and any other supplies you’ll need. Being prepared and organized is half the battle.
2. Keep in mind that there may be some bumps along the way the first few days. Try to keep things in perspective and not sweat the small stuff.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. There are many free support services available to you at the college but don’t wait until you’ve gotten too far behind.
4. This is an exciting time in your life. Make the most of it and enjoy the new friends and experiences you’ll encounter along the way.

Use Your Smartphone to Access Library Info
